Why June is Perfect for Walking in Epsom

June brings longer daylight hours and warm, dry weather—ideal for exploring Epsom and its surroundings on foot. Whether you're after a gentle after-work stroll or a proper countryside ramble, the town and nearby areas offer something for every walker. Best of all, most walks are completely free.

Epsom Downs: Views and Fresh Air

The Downs remain the jewel in Epsom's walking crown. This open grassland rises 200 metres and offers panoramic views across Surrey and towards London on clear days. The walk is undemanding and takes around 30 minutes to the summit from the town, making it ideal for lunch-hour escapes or weekend family outings. Bring a picnic blanket and enjoy the space—it's particularly lovely on June evenings when the light lingers.

Nonsuch Park: Woodland and History

Stradling the boundary between Cheam and Ewell, Nonsuch Park combines history with natural beauty. Named after a Tudor palace that once stood here, the park offers wooded trails, open grassland, and a pleasant lake circuit. The walk is more sheltered than the Downs, making it pleasant even on warmer days. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a full loop, or dip in for a shorter stroll.

Ewell Village: Historic and Charming

Ewell village itself rewards a gentle walking exploration. Start at St Mary's Church on the village green, where there's a pretty pond and plenty of historic character. The church dates back centuries, and the surrounding streets retain a village atmosphere despite Epsom's growth. Pop into local independent shops along the way—there's a real sense of community here. The Bourne Hall Museum sits on Spring Street if you fancy adding a cultural element to your walk.

Stoneleigh and Ashtead: Local Neighbourhood Walks

For something closer to home if you're based in north Epsom, Stoneleigh Broadway offers a pleasant parade of independent shops worth a stroll. Ashtead Common provides excellent woodland walking with a genuine village-feel atmosphere. Both areas have well-regarded local pubs where you can rest your feet afterwards.

Practical Tips

Wear proper walking shoes—Surrey ground can be muddy even days after rain. June can bring sudden showers, so a small pack is wise. The Downs and Nonsuch Park have limited shade, so sun protection matters. If you're using public transport, trains from Epsom reach Ewell Village in a few minutes, and buses serve all these areas well.

Making the Most of It

June's longer evenings mean you can leave work and still enjoy an hour's walking in daylight. Walking groups meet regularly around Epsom too, if you'd prefer company. Start with the Downs if you want views and accessibility, or explore Ewell village for history and charm.
