Why September is Perfect for Epsom Exploration

September is a wonderful month to get outdoors in Epsom. The summer heat has eased, the light is golden, and you'll often find yourself alone on the best walks. The Downs are quieter than in summer, and the surrounding countryside is starting to show the first hints of autumn colour.

Epsom Downs — A Proper Local Escape

The Downs remain free to walk all year round, and September is genuinely one of the best months to visit. The views across London are often crystal clear on crisp mornings, and the grassland feels spacious and peaceful. Whether you're a regular or haven't visited in years, a September walk here is restorative—no ticket required, no fuss.

Bring a packed breakfast or coffee from a local café, and settle in for an hour or two. The Racecourse itself sits quietly at this time of year, and the surrounding paths are perfect for families or solo walkers alike.

Nonsuch Park — Hidden Gem Between Cheam and Ewell

Nonsuch Park straddles the boundary between Cheam and Ewell, and it's one of Epsom's best-kept secrets. The park is entirely free to explore, with a network of woodland walks, open meadows, and a peaceful pond. In September, the tree cover is still full, but the undergrowth is less overgrown than in high summer, making walking easier.

There's real history here too—the park sits on the grounds of a Tudor palace, though little remains visible. That sense of something deeper makes the walk feel special. Pack a picnic and spend an afternoon here.

Ashtead Common — Village Walks with Character

Ashtead has a proper village feel, and the Common is the heart of it. September is an excellent time to explore the paths here, especially early morning when you might see wildlife. The village pubs nearby offer a warm welcome once you've worked up an appetite, though the walk itself is the main event.

Ewell Village and Bourne Hall

Ewell village pond and the green around St Mary's Church are picturesque year-round, but September light makes them particularly photogenic. The pond is a focal point for the village, and it's lovely to sit and watch the water.

Bourne Hall Museum, on Spring Street in Ewell, is free to enter and holds local history treasures. September is a good time to pop in—quieter than summer, but still open—and it's a natural addition to a village walk.

Getting Around Without Fuss

All these places are accessible by foot or local buses from Epsom town centre. If you're coming by train, Epsom Station connects you to these areas within 15–20 minutes on foot.

A Simple September Ritual

Pick one spot, go early, and take your time. September in Epsom is generous and unhurried.
