Why September Is Perfect for Walking in Epsom

September brings gentler temperatures and clearer skies—ideal conditions for exploring Epsom's countryside on foot. The summer crowds have thinned, and autumn hasn't quite taken hold, making this a sweet spot for outdoor exploration.

Epsom Downs: The Essential Walk

Start with the obvious: Epsom Downs itself. Free to access and open year-round, the Downs offer some of the finest views across Surrey and into London. The walk up to the racecourse grandstand is gentle and rewarding, especially on a clear September day when visibility stretches far beyond the town.

Park near the racecourse or catch a bus to the top. Most people walk the perimeter paths or head towards the tree-lined edges where you'll find pockets of shade and quieter routes away from the main tracks.

Nonsuch Park: Two Villages, One Walk

Nonsuch Park straddles Cheam and Ewell and remains one of the area's hidden gems. September is excellent timing—the park is dry underfoot but still lush. Explore the woodland trails, open parkland, and the ornamental lake. It's substantial enough for a proper walk (try 90 minutes to two hours) without requiring specialist gear.

There's good parking, and the park's gentle slopes and varied terrain suit different fitness levels. Bring binoculars if you're interested in birds; September migration patterns mean interesting visitors passing through.

Ewell Village Pond and Historic Walks

For something quieter and more intimate, the village green at Ewell Pond is charming. St Mary's Church overlooks the water, and the surrounding lanes have genuine village character. Combine this with a visit to Bourne Hall Museum on nearby Spring Street for local history context—entry is free, and it's worth an hour of anyone's time.

Ashtead Common and Village Walks

Ashtead, just south of Epsom town centre, has a real village feel and excellent walking access to the Common itself. September is ideal for exploring the woodland trails and open grassland. The village also has good pubs for a post-walk pint, making it a natural destination for a full afternoon out.

Practical Tips for September Walks

Footwear: Summer drought may have hardened paths, but September rain can arrive suddenly. Proper walking shoes are sensible.

Timing: Daylight hours are still long—dawn and dusk walks are both feasible—but the sun sets noticeably earlier than August. Plan accordingly.

Parking: Most walks mentioned have nearby parking. Check locally before heading out.

Free activities: All routes suggested here are completely free and require no booking.

September is your window to explore Epsom's best outdoor spaces in comfort. The weather is usually cooperative, the paths are clear, and you'll likely have more breathing room than in peak summer.
