Why June is Perfect for Outdoor Epsom

June offers something special to those of us living in Epsom. The days are long—sunset comes around 9 p.m.—and the weather is reliably warm. The Surrey countryside around us comes alive with greenery, and it's the ideal time to step outside before the school holidays bring crowds to popular spots.

Walking Epsom Downs

Epsom Downs is one of your greatest local assets, and it costs nothing to visit. The open grassland stretches across the KT18 postcode area and offers views across London on clear days. A walk here takes you away from the town centre within minutes.

The Downs work for all abilities. You can take a gentle stroll around the flatter areas near the racecourse, or explore the rolling slopes further afield. Early morning visits feel particularly peaceful, and the space is popular with dog walkers, joggers and families with children.

Discovering Nonsuch Park

Nonsuch Park straddles the border between Cheam and Ewell, offering woodland walks, open parkland and a working farm area. It's free to enter and ideal for a longer afternoon out. The park has good walking paths suitable for buggies and wheelchairs, plus plenty of spots to stop for a picnic.

In June, the wildflower areas are at their best. If you're interested in local history, you'll spot the remains of Nonsuch Palace—the Tudor palace that once stood here—though only fragments survive.

Ewell Village and the Pond

Ewell Village has a real sense of place. The village pond sits beside historic St Mary's Church, creating a picturesque green space that feels removed from modern Epsom despite being just minutes away by bus or car.

It's a lovely spot for a quiet walk, especially in the morning. The local churchyard is peaceful, and nearby streets have a village character worth exploring on foot.

Practical June Outdoors Tips

Wear sun protection. Even on cloudy days, the UV index in June is significant. Bring water and a hat if you're spending a couple of hours outside.

Start early if you prefer quieter spaces. Morning visits to the Downs and Nonsuch Park mean easier parking and more peaceful walks.

Check the weather before heading out, but don't let a light shower stop you. June rain is usually warm and brief.

Getting Around Without a Car

If you're using public transport, trains from Epsom take around 35 minutes to London Waterloo or 40 minutes to Victoria. For local movement, buses serve Epsom Downs regularly, and Ewell Village is reachable by several bus routes. Cycling is also very workable for reaching Nonsuch Park and the Downs.

Bringing It Together

June is when Epsom's outdoor character shines. Whether you choose the open views of the Downs, woodland walks at Nonsuch, or the quiet charm of Ewell Village, there's genuinely excellent countryside within reach of your home.
