July Walks and Outdoor Activities Around Epsom
Make the most of summer evenings and weekends with our guide to free walks and outdoor exploration across Epsom and beyond.
Epsom Downs: Views and Fresh Air
Start with Epsom Downs itself—one of the most accessible and rewarding walks right on your doorstep. The Downs are completely free to explore and offer sweeping views across London on clear days. It's a generous stretch of grassland where you can wander at your own pace, perfect for an evening stroll or weekend morning. The racecourse sits within the Downs, so you'll see the famous landscape that hosts the Derby, but the walking routes are open year-round and cost nothing.
Nonsuch Park: A Hidden Gem
If you're looking for something with more woodland character, Nonsuch Park straddles Cheam and Ewell and feels like proper countryside without leaving the local area. The park has excellent walking paths through mixed woodland and open parkland, with plenty of spots to stop and enjoy the surroundings. Summer is ideal for exploring the quieter corners, and it's entirely free to access.
Ewell Village and Historic Walks
Ewell Village itself is worth a dedicated afternoon walk. The pretty village pond and green area provide a focal point, and St Mary's Church is worth pausing to admire if you enjoy local heritage. The whole area has a gentler, more established feel than central Epsom, and there are good pubs nearby if you fancy refuelling after your walk.
Ashtead: Village Character
Slightly further out, Ashtead offers real village atmosphere with access to Ashtead Common for longer walks. The village has a distinctive character and some well-regarded local pubs make it worth the trip. It's still easily accessible from central Epsom but feels like a proper escape.
Summer Evening Walks
July evenings stay light until well after 9pm, so you've got plenty of time for a proper walk after work. The Downs are particularly pleasant in the early evening when the day's heat is fading and the light becomes beautiful. Pack a picnic, bring a camera, and take advantage of the long daylight hours.
Practical Tips
Wear comfortable shoes—these walks are mostly on grass and paths, but Epsom's terrain can be gently rolling. Bring water, especially on warmer days. The Downs and Nonsuch Park have car parks if you're driving, but they're also accessible by local bus routes. If you're using the train, Ewell and Stoneleigh stations serve the area well.
Making It Regular
July is the ideal month to establish a walking routine. Pick one or two favourite routes and visit them weekly—you'll start to notice seasonal changes, local wildlife, and find your own quiet spots. These green spaces are truly free and open to everyone, making them brilliant for all seasons ahead.
