Why Leave the Car at Home?

Epsom is surprisingly easy to navigate without a vehicle. Whether you're popping to the market, heading into London for the day, or exploring our local beauty spots, there are plenty of practical alternatives to driving. You'll often find it quicker, cheaper, and far more pleasant—especially during peak times when traffic builds up around the town centre.

Train Travel from Epsom

Epsom railway station is your gateway to London and beyond. Direct trains run regularly to London Waterloo (around 35 minutes) and London Victoria (around 40 minutes), making commuting straightforward. The station is right in the heart of town, with good connections to local buses and a short walk to the high street.

For day trips, trains make reaching the South Coast or other Surrey destinations simple. Journey times are predictable, and off-peak fares are genuinely affordable.

Local Bus Routes

Epsom's bus network covers most residential areas, linking town centre shops to outlying villages like Ashtead and Stoneleigh. Buses run regularly throughout the day, and if you're a frequent traveller, consider getting a travel card—they often offer better value than paying per journey.

Walking Epsom Town Centre

The high street, Ashley Centre market area, and surrounding shops are all within easy walking distance of each other. Wednesday and Saturday market days bring a real buzz to the town, and it's a genuinely pleasant stroll between independent shops on Stoneleigh Broadway or around the quieter streets near Spring Street.

Exploring on Foot: Green Spaces

For longer walks, Epsom Downs is free to access and offers wonderful views across Surrey toward London. The chalk grassland is perfect for a weekend wander. Nonsuch Park, straddling Cheam and Ewell, has excellent walking trails and plenty of space to lose yourself for a few hours.

Ewell village itself is a charming place to explore on foot—the historic village pond and St Mary's Church reward a leisurely afternoon walk.

Cycling Around Epsom

While Epsom doesn't have extensive dedicated cycle lanes, quiet residential streets connect most neighbourhoods, and cyclists can often find peaceful routes between the main roads. The approach to Nonsuch Park and around Ewell village is particularly pleasant for cycling.

Planning Your Journey

Check Transport for London's Journey Planner for real-time bus and train information. Walking apps help you discover quieter routes through residential areas. Many local attractions—Bourne Hall Museum in Ewell (free entry, Spring Street), the market, and local pubs—are all reachable without driving.

Leaving the car behind isn't about sacrifice; it's about rediscovering your neighbourhood on foot or finding time to read, relax, or plan your day on the train. Epsom rewards the unhurried traveller.
