Epsom Downs: Views and Fresh Air

Start with the obvious gem. Epsom Downs is completely free to visit and remains one of the most rewarding walks in the area. The elevated position gives you genuine views across London on clear days, and the open grassland is perfect for June wandering. There's real space to breathe here, and you'll often spot locals making it part of their regular routine. Park nearby (see our separate parking guide for details) and allow an hour to simply wander the slopes.

Nonsuch Park: Woodland and Water

Stradling Cheam and Ewell, Nonsuch Park offers something different — woodland paths, open grassland, and a genuine sense of escape despite being just a few miles out. The park is free and brilliant for a longer walk. June is particularly lovely here when everything is green and the afternoon light filters through the trees. You can easily spend two hours exploring without retracing your steps.

Ewell Village Pond and St Mary's Church

For something gentler and more historic, head to Ewell village itself. The pond area is a proper village green — the kind that reminds you Epsom was once made up of distinct communities. St Mary's Church sits nearby, and the whole area has a peaceful, timeless quality. It's perfect for a 30-minute stroll before grabbing something to eat locally.

Ashtead Common: Another Surrey Classic

Ashtead, just beyond the Epsom boundary, has a village feel and excellent common walks. The terrain is more varied than the Downs, with patches of woodland mixed into open spaces. Local pubs make it a natural destination for a walk-and-refuel outing.

Walking Without a Car

Good news: Epsom's trains and buses connect these spots reasonably well. See our separate guide to getting around Epsom without a car for timetables and routes. Many walks can be linked with a short bus or train hop, so you're not limited to what's within immediate walking distance of home.

What to Bring

June weather is unpredictable. Bring a light layer, sunscreen, and a water bottle — none of these walks have particular facilities, so come prepared. Wear proper walking shoes; Downs paths can be muddy even days after rain.

Making It a Regular Thing

The beauty of these routes is that they're genuinely free and open year-round. Once you've tried one, consider rotating them into a weekly routine. Locals often speak about their regular Downs walk or Nonsuch Park visit as a genuine anchor to their week.
