Why October is Perfect for Walking in Epsom

Autumn has arrived in Surrey, and there's no better time to get out and explore Epsom on foot. The summer crowds have thinned, the air is crisp, and the trees are turning brilliant shades of gold and copper. October offers that sweet spot between summer warmth and winter chill—ideal conditions for a proper walk without overheating or freezing.

Best of all, most of Epsom's best walking spots are completely free.

Epsom Downs: Views and History

Start with the obvious choice. Epsom Downs is open to everyone year-round and costs nothing to explore. It's a stunning stretch of grassland with unobstructed views across London on clear days. October's lower sun angle makes for particularly dramatic lighting, and the Downs are far quieter than during the summer months.

Wear sturdy shoes—the ground can be soft after autumn rain—and bring a camera. Even if you're not interested in racing, the Racecourse itself is fascinating from a historical perspective. Allow 90 minutes to two hours for a proper explore.

Nonsuch Park: Woodland and Water

Nonsuch Park straddles Cheam and Ewell and offers something different: proper woodland walking alongside open parkland. The autumn light filtering through the trees is beautiful, and you'll find the park far less crowded on weekday mornings.

The circular walks here range from 30 minutes to over an hour. There's a pond to explore, open fields, and genuine countryside feeling just a short walk from Epsom town centre. Entry is free, and there's parking on-site if you need it.

Ewell Village and the Pond

For a shorter, gentler walk with character, head to Ewell Village. The historic village green with its pond is lovely in autumn, and St Mary's Church sits at the heart of the community. It's the sort of place where you can combine a walk with a proper look around—visit Bourne Hall Museum (free entry) to understand Ewell's local history, then settle in one of the village pubs for a warm drink.

The whole experience takes two to three hours if you take your time.

Practical Tips for October Walking

Bring layers. October weather is unpredictable—you might start in sunshine and end in drizzle. A waterproof jacket is sensible; trainers with good grip will keep you steady on potentially slippery paths.

Start early in the day. October daylight hours are shortening, so an early start means you'll enjoy more light and won't feel rushed.

Bring water and a snack. None of these walks require specialist kit, but you'll enjoy them more if you're properly prepared.

Getting There Without a Car

If you're relying on public transport, trains from Epsom station serve most of these spots reasonably well. Nonsuch Park and Ewell Village are both walkable from Ewell station, and Epsom Downs has excellent footpath access from the town centre.

October walking in Epsom is simple, rewarding, and absolutely free. Get out there.
