Why October is Perfect for Walking in Epsom

As the summer crowds fade and the leaves turn, October is one of the best months to explore Epsom on foot. The weather is crisp but not cold, and the afternoons still offer plenty of daylight for a proper walk. Whether you're a keen rambler or just fancy a gentle stroll, there's something for everyone.

Epsom Downs: The Town's Great Outdoor Space

Starting with the obvious—Epsom Downs is free to access and offers some of the finest views in Surrey. The open grassland means you can walk in almost any direction, and on a clear October day, you'll see right across London. It's popular with dog walkers and families, and there's something wonderfully meditative about walking the same paths that racegoers use on Derby Day.

Park near the racecourse or walk up from Epsom town centre. The Downs are particularly lovely in autumn when the light turns golden in the late afternoon.

Nonsuch Park: Two Villages, One Walk

Stradling the border between Cheam and Ewell, Nonsuch Park offers a completely different experience. The historic grounds are free to explore, with woodland paths, open parkland, and glimpses of the old palace ruins. It's more sheltered than the Downs, making it ideal if the wind picks up.

Take your time here—there are plenty of spots to sit and watch the trees change colour. The park also has a small visitor centre with information about the site's fascinating history.

Ewell Village: A Gentler October Stroll

If you prefer a village walk with a bit of history, head to Ewell. The pond and village green around St Mary's Church make for a picturesque spot, especially with autumn foliage reflected in the water. The village has a quieter, more intimate feel than the Downs, and it's easy to combine your walk with a visit to a local café or the Bourne Hall Museum, which is free entry and tells the story of local life through the centuries.

Getting Around Without a Car

All of these walks are easily reached by public transport. Epsom train station connects you to towns across Surrey, and local buses serve most neighbourhoods. From the station, it's a pleasant walk up to Epsom Downs—about 20 minutes—or you can catch a bus partway.

What to Bring

October weather can be changeable, so a waterproof layer is wise. Wear proper walking shoes with good grip—autumn paths can be muddy and slippery. Bring water and a snack, and a camera if you fancy capturing the season.

Make It a Habit

The beauty of October walking in Epsom is that these spaces are here year-round. Once you've discovered your favourite route, you can return again and again through the changing seasons.
