Why August is Perfect for Exploring Epsom

August is one of the best months to get outdoors in Epsom. The days are long, the weather is warm, and our green spaces are at their most lush. Whether you're a keen walker or just looking for a gentle afternoon out, there's something for everyone—and much of it costs nothing at all.

Epsom Downs: Views and Fresh Air

Start with the obvious gem: Epsom Downs. This free open space sits just above the town centre and offers stunning views across London on a clear day. The walk up from the High Street takes about 15 minutes, and once you're there, you can potter about the gentle slopes, spot wildflowers, or simply sit and take in the view. The racecourse itself is historic ground, and even on non-race days, the Downs feel spacious and welcoming.

Bring a picnic and settle in for an hour or two. The paths are well-maintained, and there's usually a breeze even on warm days.

Nonsuch Park: A Larger Adventure

For a longer walk, head to Nonsuch Park, which straddles the boundary between Cheam and Ewell. This is proper countryside on Epsom's doorstep—around 160 acres of woodland, grassland, and lake. You can easily spend two or three hours here exploring different routes. The paths are clearly marked, and it's brilliant for families because there's room to run about.

In August, the park is particularly beautiful. The trees provide welcome shade, and you might spot wildlife around the lake.

Ewell Village: History and a Pretty Walk

Head southeast to Ewell village for a gentler, more historic experience. The village green around Ewell pond is charming, with St Mary's Church providing a striking backdrop. The church itself is worth a look if you're interested in local history.

Just along Spring Street, Bourne Hall Museum offers free entry and tells the story of the area's past. It's a pleasant walk from the pond, and on a warm August afternoon, you've got a lovely half-day planned without leaving your wallet behind.

Ashtead: Village Walks and Local Character

Ashtead, to the south, has a proper village feel despite being close to town. Ashtead Common offers wonderful walking, with woodland paths and open grassy areas. It's quieter than Epsom Downs and feels more intimate. The village itself has independent character worth a wander—local shops, good pubs, and a genuine community atmosphere.

Practical Tips for August Walks

Bring water on any walk longer than 30 minutes. August sun can be deceptive, and the gentle slopes of our local walks are more tiring than you'd think. Start early if you can—before 10am is ideal—and you'll avoid the hottest part of the day.

Epsom's network of free walking routes makes August an ideal month to explore properly. No tickets, no queues, just fresh air and local discovery.
