What a week it's been! Late May sunshine, longer evenings, and some genuinely brilliant news about our corner of Surrey. Whether you've been caught up in the local buzz or just getting back to normal, there's plenty to enjoy as we head into June.

This Week in Epsom

- Painshill Park gets The Guardian nod — Our treasured landscape has been named one of the UK's most glorious oddities by The Guardian. If you haven't visited recently, it's the perfect excuse to spend an afternoon wandering those eccentric 18th-century gardens. The rhododendrons should still be putting on a show, and there's something wonderfully romantic about Painshill at this time of year.

- Rail services go public this Sunday — Thameslink, Southern, Gatwick Express and Great Northern services move into public ownership as part of the Great British Railways programme. If you commute from Epsom or Ewell, keep an eye on TfL and GTR's websites for any service updates over the changeover weekend.

- The Cockrow Bridge is officially open — Wildlife and walkers can now safely cross the A3 via the UK's first heathland green bridge, near Epsom. It's a brilliant piece of infrastructure and marks nearly 50 years since the route was last accessible. Worth a proper visit if you're into local walking routes.

- Legoland's Lego Festival is back for summer — Just over at Windsor, the world's largest Lego Festival returns for the school holidays with interactive zones, building challenges, and treats. Perfect if you've got younger family visiting or fancy a nostalgic afternoon.

This Weekend

Weather permitting, get yourself outdoors. Epsom Downs is always free and glorious — walk the Surrey countryside, let the kids run around, grab a coffee from one of the cafés. Saturday morning? Head to Epsom Market (it's on every Wednesday and Saturday) for fresh produce, plants, and proper local chat.

If wandering gardens is more your speed, a trip to Painshill is thoroughly recommended. Bring a picnic, wear good shoes, and give yourself a good couple of hours. It's genuinely one of the most interesting Georgian gardens you'll find.

For something closer to home, Ashtead Common is lovely for a gentle woodland walk, and the Ewell area has some peaceful spots if you fancy exploring the village's quieter corners.

Where to Eat and Drink

Yaadein in Stoneleigh does brilliant Indian food — proper flavours, generous portions, and genuinely friendly service. Ideal for a weekend treat without faffing about in town.

If beer gardens are calling, The Jolly Coopers is worth a visit. Decent pint, relaxed atmosphere, and they've done nice work with their outdoor space.

For something a bit different, Dastaan on Kingston Road serves excellent North Indian cuisine in a welcoming setting. The naans are top-notch and they do a good lunch menu if you're popping by mid-week.

Worth Knowing

Rail changeover Sunday — Services transition to public ownership. Allow extra time if you're travelling, check TfL Journey Planner before you head out, and be patient with operators during the handover.

Painshill opening times — Pop on their website to check before you visit; they occasionally have special hours or closures for events. Entry's around £8-9 depending on season, and it's genuinely worth every penny.
